‘Fortress of Franzensfeste’ by Markus Scherer + Walter Dietl. A renovated fortress in northern Italy that was refurbished to host regional exhibitions. Originally constructed in the 19th century by an Italian family has since then been used as a gunpowder depot, army territory and most recently host to the ‘08 European contemporary art biennale. It now features bridges, underground tunnels, concrete towers, and restored vaults as exhibition rooms with newly exposed brick arches and steel staircases. Incredible project - the name is even beautiful!
